At 1:23AM of Saturday 26 April 1986, the nuclear reactor no. 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded as a result of a failed security test. What followed is considered the worst nuclear disaster in the history of mankind.
Almost 115,000 people were evacuated from the area, starting from Pripyat and its surrounding villages. Although some of them eventually resettled, the Chernobyl area today is a cluster of deserted or semi-deserted settlements.
It is difficult to estimate the overall casualities of the Chernobyl disaster. The number of deaths and illnesses caused by the radiations remains a debated subject. This is also due to the difficulties in tracing the long-term pernicious effects of the radiations. Death esimates range between 4,000 to 20,000. Only in Ukraine, as of 2018, 1.8 million people had the status of victims of the disaster.

Alle ore 1:23AM di Sabato 26 Aprile 1986, il reattore nucleare n.4 della centrale nucleare di Cernobyl esplose a seguito di un fallito test di sicurezza. Quello che ne segui’ e’ universalmente riconosciuto come il disastro nucleare piu’ grave a cui l’umanità abbia assistito.
Quasi 115.000 persone furono evaquate dall’area, a cominciare da Pripyat e i villaggi adiacenti. Sebbene alcune di quelle persone siano rientrate dopo molti anni, l’intera area di Chernobyl oggi appare some un desolato agglomerato di villaggi fantasma.
E’ difficile stimare il numero totale di vittime del disastro di Chernobyl. Il numero delle morti e delle mallattie causate dalle radiazioni rimane un argomento dibattuto. Il conteggio e’ reso ancora piu’ arduo dalle difficoltà nel tracciamento delle radiazioni a lungo termine. Le vittime stimate oscillano fra 4.000 and 20.000. Solo in Ucrania, al 2018 1.8 milioni di persone hanno avuto riconosciuto lo status di vittime del disastro.
